Movin’ on up – towards 2030

The Lambeth Climate Action Plan was published in March 2022 and sets out measures to support the borough become carbon net zero compatible by 2030. It meshes closely with the Transport Plan and…

…sets out a range of ambitious targets that will need to be met for Lambeth to reach Net Zero Carbon by 2030, including the need to reduce motor traffic levels in the borough by 27% [and for] 85% of resident journeys in Lambeth to be made by walking, cycling or public transport. [76% at 2022]

In October 2022 Lambeth published details of the next phases of delivery for sustainable transport in the borough.

We’re hugely impressed with this level of commitment – this is a really significant volume of funded projects (and the borough will continue to seek funding from TfL for more). Highlights include –

Updated LTN prioritisation criteria

A prioritisation exercise has been carried out to inform the future LTN programme. This process divided the borough into 53 neighbourhood areas separated by busier roads or other boundaries such as railway lines. Twenty five prioritisation factors were then considered covering traffic and road safety, mode shift potential, population, health, air quality / climate and ‘trip attractors’ / amenities. Additional weighting was then applied according to school population and levels of deprivation.

Phase 2 work includes the next three LTN trials and progress on Healthy Routes

Phase 3 work includes:

  • Rosendale Road phases 3&4
  • 24/7 bus lanes
  • Waterloo Road cycleway
  • Westminster Road cycleway
  • and FOUR more LTN trials focused on the north of the borough (leading from the reprioritisation exercise). Note – these maps are not in any way confirmed.

As ever, the proof is in the delivery, but this is a really impressive commitment to delivering against the borough Climate and Transport strategies and when in place, will significantly improve active travel in the borough. Bravo.
