Preparations for Tfl Cycle Superhighway 7 running from Colliers Wood to Southwark Bridge via Clapham Common and Clapham Road continue as we move towards the launch this summer. There are concerns about whether the measures proposed by the Mayor will offer anything of real value to London’s cyclists.
Lambeth Cyclists’ Clare Neely writes At a recent meeting of Lambeth Transport Forum, councillors gave their support to Lambeth Transport Department officers who are very concerned that the Cycle Superhighway is little more than blue paint on the road. Like LCC in general and Lambeth Cyclists in particular they know that nothing is being done under the current proposals, to improve the key barriers to cycling on the route: Clapham High Street, the Stockwell Triangle and the junction outside Oval tube station. As ever the reason for lack of progress is TfL’s fixation with maintaining road capacity for motor vehicles. That is, not reallocating the space on the road that is necessary to make a real difference for cycling.
Numerous examples from across London have shown that when you reduce road capacity it does NOT increase congestion. The classic example is Vauxhall Cross. When bus priority was put in, the amount of road space was reduced by 17%. Did South London grind to a halt? No? Probably around 80% of car journeys at any one time are not absolutely necessary. They could be driven at another time, done with a friend, done on public transport or are short enough to walk or cycle. When road space is reallocated to walking, cycling or public transport, people get out of their cars rather than sit in congestion. Sadly it seems that TfL is still to understand that.
